He believed the stack would get better. He thought the channel would grow up. He was wrong about some of that. What he witnessed instead was a slow, thorough enshittification of nearly everything worth caring about: pricing engineered to confuse rather than communicate, conferences designed to sustain the vendor ecosystem rather than the practitioners inside it, metrics that measure activity and call it health, and a trade press that stopped asking hard questions somewhere around the time the ad dollars got good.
